Creating an Open, Inclusive, and Sustainable Scholarly Publishing Landscape

Abstract

Library publishing has emerged over the last twenty years as an academy-owned mechanism driving the creation of openly accessible scholarly works. The Library Publishing Coalition (LPC), an independent, community-led membership association of 80 academic and research libraries and library consortia, brings awareness to this developing work of library publishing through engagement with all individuals and organizations who are interested in rethinking and reshaping traditional publishing. Since its formation 6 years ago, the LPC has created a thriving organizational framework to build a community of practice, facilitate conversations, and develop collaborations among the broader community of library publishers, LPC members, and LPC affiliates. Working together, we develop and share materials (such as the Library Publishing Curriculum and the Ethical Framework for Library Publishing) that set and advocate best practices within the field. As library publishing grows globally, the LPC provides space for interested individuals and institutions to engage with each other through online resources, webinar sessions, formal membership, attendance at its annual Library Publishing Forum, strategic affiliate membership, and other learning and engagement activities. This session will outline how the LPC creates opportunities for individuals and institutions to engage and interact around library publishing as well as provide support for those who wish to get more involved. The presenter will also provide an overview of the LPC, its strategic goals and initiatives, and how it promotes the further development of open access scholarly publishing practices and communities.
