From daunting to doable: A practical approach to building inclusive LibGuides

Abstract

After a group of library employees took a course on Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and libraries, we were inspired to ask: • How can we use UDL to make our LibGuides more accessible to diverse learners? • What UDL elements in LibGuides are highest impact and easiest to implement? We reviewed the library science literature on LibGuides and UDL and found a Washington State University usability study that tested UDL elements in a course-related LibGuide to identify the most effective UDL features in the LibGuide. We combined the WSU study’s findings and web content accessibility guidelines (WCAG 2.0) to make a checklist for building effective, inclusive LibGuides.
